Italian archbishop of Canterbury from 1070;
he rebuilt the cathedral, replaced English
clergy by Normans, enforced clerical
celibacy, and separated the ecclesiastical
from the secular courts. His skill in
theological controversy did much to secure
the church's adoption of the doctrine of
transubstantiation. He came over to England
with William the Conqueror, whose adviser he
was. Lanfranc was born in Pavia, Italy; he
entered the monastery of Bec, Normandy, in
1042, where he opened a school which achieved
international fame; St Anselm, later his
successor, was his pupil there.
